  • Children's books -Series

    Judy Watson - Thunderstorm Dancing

    Highly Commended

Art director: Sue Flockhart (editor) and Sandra Nobes (designer)

    Client: Allen and Unwin

Description: "Katrina Germein's text described a family responding to a thunderstorm with dance and play; each member of the family acting out an element of the storm. The illustration brief was fairly open, encouraging visual exuberance and expressiveness without making any image too frightening for the target audience (children from kindergarten to around grade two). Finding ways to turn the members of the family into the elements of the storm was in some cases tricky; Mummy being one of the most difficult. She was to be one of the less violent storm features, a powerful but nurturing figure. I finally found a way to depict her as rain by using her long hair. Her face looks down in a benign way upon the drenching below. The use of ink and watercolour on litho paper gave an authenticity to the wet, earthy nature of the subject matter, and digital sgraffito was useful for adding a fine rain texture. Bold colour such as red was added in limited blocks as a digital layer to give compositional focus and flashes of brightness. Both images are double page spreads out of the book.
