Katherine Smith is an illustrator, designer and artist born in New Zealand and currently living in Sydney, Australia.
From an early age, Katherine was passionate about art and design - always drawing, painting and sculpting. She went on to train and work as an industrial designer while continuing her study of fine art. She often pondered whether she was, at heart, more a designer or an artist. This conundrum eventually led her to illustration which melds her two great passions, art and design.
Her illustration work is created with hand drawn ink, watercolour and handmade textures that are assembled and coloured digitally. Her work is influenced by many artistic traditions including Japanese woodblock prints and Persian miniatures.
Katherine is an 'amphibious' creator, spending much of her spare time swimming, free-diving, scuba diving and observing marine life. Consequently, aquatic themes frequently infuse her work.
Katherine is a graduate of Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in the MA Illustration program.
