The Crank Institute

I've drawn pictures as long as I can remember. In Grade 2, Mrs Knack eventually asked if I had anything other than my pictures to bring for Show & Tell. These days I'm living in Melbourne and working as an illustrator... and I still quite like showing people my pictures. Sorry Mrs Knack. In the 90s I completed a bachelor degree in Visual Arts at James Cook University, and I majored in illustration. Love the process of summarising concepts or narratives with a single image - particularly enjoy satirical work, as well as the fantastic or horrific. So if a spaceman having appalling things done to him by a tentacle-monster can be given satirical intent, obviously that would be ideal. I often mix traditional, hand-made pieces with a bit of digital photoshoppery. I'm partial to pencils and brushed acrylics, but have happily worked with airbrush, oils, pastels, spray cans, charcoal, crayons - whatever seems right for the job. In 2015 Illustrators Australia gave me a silver award for my beer label illustration, The Cavalier Catfish, for which I'm quite chuffed. For examples of my work, do take a look at my website and Redbubble page, or check out the selection right here at IA. (www.redbubble.com/people/CrankInstitute/portfolio)
